Choosing your Bathroom Curtains

Choosing the right curtains for a bathroom can become a task. The marketplace offers one a wide array of curtains, which doesn’t make matters easier. We do have options however. The options enable us to choose style, colors, patterns, and so on. The most important thing a person can do however is to investigate their bathroom first. Your investigation will help you choose coordinating colors and patterns.

How do I choose the right color for my curtains?
When choosing the right colors, you want to use information you have gathered, since choice of style, color, and patterns. You may want to go online, or to local department stores to view, the variety of curtains offered to you. Having a visual always helps one to choose patterns and designs.

Once you have chosen your style and patterns, it will be easier to choose your colors. The basic concept is to make sure that the colors match the colors of your existing bathroom accessories, windowpanes, doors, floors, rugs, wall covers, etc.

How will I know if my curtain fits?
To make sure that your curtain will fit you must measure your window first. Use a standard craftsmen-measuring gauge. You want to measure lengthwise and widthwise starting at the center of the fabric. If you are creating your own by hand, measure across the length and width. Leave a bit of allowances for your seams, which should always be around half-inch to a quarter inch.

How do I choose hooks or rings?
When deciding the pattern you can consider hooks and rings once you finish. Like curtains, you have a wide array of curtain rods, rings, and hooks to choose. You have the choice of hooks, or rings such as the looped items, which loop around your rod. Remember however, that the rod should fit the style of your curtains, hooks and/or rings.

Your choices include the round pine and maple rods. The rods will add a twist of charm to your new atmosphere.

How do I install my new curtains?
Installing the new curtains is not difficult. Keep in mind that your brackets are straight. To do this you may want to use a tape measure to gauge the distance down from the ceiling. Make sure that you start on both sides, starting on the same side. Once you finish, use artisans pencil to mark the spot. This will help you to remember where you need to drill holes for mounting. If you want you can choose common brackets to mount your curtain rods, screws, etc, which you will need to mark you spot so you don’t forget also. Once you finish, you can then hang your curtains.

When you start to measure, your curtains start in the room, measuring the window, measuring the window length to width. Keep notes so that you do not loose your information. Once you have your curtains mounted, you may want to consider shades, top treatments, home accents, coordinating pillows, and more. If you added flowery curtains to your bathroom, you may want to purchase and/or build a corner stand. Sit the stand in the corner of the room and add a flower vase and coordinating artificial flowers. In addition, you can add a few wicker baskets in your bathroom to store decorative soaps, perfumes, fancy toiletries, and so on. The baskets filled with fancy items will leave a lasting impression on your visitors.

Speaking of curtains, you may want to review window binds instead. Window blinds give a natural feel to the atmosphere; as well, the blinds are easy to wash. If you have a loved one in the home with a handicap, you may want to consider showers designed to accommodate the disabled also.

Windows and Curtains in the Home

Windows play an important role in the construction of a house, which are known for the wealth of functions they accomplish within a house setting. Over time, one of the most popular ways to deal with the decoration of a window is to install curtains or draperies that serve many different purposes. With a vast assortment of colours, sizes, and materials, curtains deliver a multitude of options for the houseowner to use at their discretion. Depending on the needs of an individual, the reasons why curtains are placed about their house setting may greatly vary.

Privacy:

A window without any obstruction of view allows strangers and anyone else who passes by a house to look inside. One of the most popular reasons why curtains are used is to give a sense of security that privacy is enforced on the home front. Without curtains, the actions and activities that take place within a house are in plain sight. On another level, curtains may also provide privacy by acting as a seperator or partition in other parts of a house. As an exampleFor example, curtains create a reasonable division in a room where two siblings feel the need to obtain a sense of their own space.

Block Sunlight:

Windows were designed for a range of reasons, some of them are decorative reasons. The main purpose of a window though is to provide light to a room. This is fine most of the time but there are occasions when the light needs to be shielded from the inside. In the darkness the window needs to be covered as light from inside the room can light up the whole room and make it easy for people outside to see in. Curtains and blinds of various types are used to offer the protection of the sun and the evening lights.

Visual Value:

In the world of interior design, curtains play a vital role in showcasing quality that attracts the eye. Curtains come in a wide range of colours, styles, and designs, which makes it easy to accommodate a wide range of interior and exterior objectives. Individuals may choose anything from abstract shapes to stripes when selecting just the right curtains to boost the ambience or setting of a room.

Since the installation of curtains is quite simple, alternating presentations and acquiring the ability to personally express one’s sense of style is much easier to accomplish. Whether you purchase draperies to match a new sofa set or wish to insert warmth to a room by adding a lighter shade of curtains, the possibilities are endless. There are now many more options available with the introduction of fashionable curtain poles. The poles can be metal or wooden with metal curtain poles being by far the most popular.

Additional Uses:

While decorating the windows of a house and enforcing privacy are some of the most popular functions associated with curtains, there are additional uses to consider. In bathrooms where sliding doors are not a feature of the shower space, curtains act as a way to achieve privacy, as well as keep water from falling onto the floor. Usually, these types of curtains are made from materials that repel water, such as plastic or a coated fabric. In some rooms, a curtain may even act as a door when a wooden selection does not exist.

Outside of the house, curtains also serve many different purposes. In regards to the theatre, curtains supply a way to conceal the stage in-between acts, which allows artists enough time to change costumes and stagehands to rearrange the scenery. The curtain hides the commotion that occurs behind-the-scenes so that the audience does not become distracted. The same concept applies in a department store dressing room, where curtains keep the act of changing into different pieces of clothing hidden from others. Overall, curtains satisfy numerous needs that arise both inside and outside of the house.

At Poles and Tracks, curtain poles are seen as an addition to the home rather than just somewhere to hang your curtains. Poles and Tracks is an ecommerce web site using Actinic.

How To Fit Curtains On Odd Shaped Windows

Check this out to get some practical window treatment ideas for your own home. Guides to the do’s and dont’s. They should give you some food for thought before you leap in and get started. (the other option……………..brick your window up and have done with it. What do you think?)

Answers to a Tall and Narrow window?

My window treatment ideas for this kind of window. Set the curtains wider than you would normally. This gives the illusion of a wider window. Make the rod or track around 30cm wider each side of your window. Rather than the usual 20cm. Then when you open your curtains don’t push them back as far as you would normally.

Wide window causing a problem?

Window treatment ideas for this kind of window are to not set the curtains to wide off the window. Probably only 15cm at most. Even though you have a lot of fabric to stack back when they open. You can use tie backs to hold them off the window. Another option is to use a thinner fabric.

Another thing that works well to give the window height is a valance or pelmet. Only rather than the usual 20cm depth make it 30 -35cm deep and fix it higher on the wall. So with the curtains not set to wide and a deeper top treatment this gives the illusion of a squarer window.

The dreaded arched windows!

Best window treatment ideas for arched windows. Most folks find this style of window a real pain.

It can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

The easiest thing to do is so simply fit a curtain rod straight across over the window and hang a pair of curtains. Just simply treat it like any other window.

If you want to work with the shape (talk about making life hard for yourself) and have curved top curtains that drapes back into tie backs, then this what you must do. On the width measure every 15cm across the window put markers on the window sill. Then note the full window width.

Next measure and make a note of both outside straight edges up to where the arch starts. Finally at each of the markers on your window sill measure straight up from the sill to where the tape measure touches the curve. make a note for a these vertical measurements. It’s a good idea to make a quick sketch of the window and jot your sizes next to the places where you measured.

If someone is making the curtains for you just give them the sizes as measured. If your having a go at making yourself then (take a tranquilizer) you need to multiply all your width sizes by 2.5 to allow for gather.

What to do with a door curtain!

Window treatment ideas for doors. Normally you would have a single curtain drawing back to the hinge side of your door. It makes a lot of sense to have the curtain tied back. (otherwise your door curtain will end up flapping like supermans cape every time someone opens the door on a windy day)

Sometimes there is not enough room on the hinge side of the door for the curtain to stack back off the door properly. You can have the curtain draw back the opposite way as long as you have room to draw the curtain completely clear of the door.

If you only have a small space on the hinge side of your door and no room the other side. Then the best option is to have an eyelet curtain on a rod with 1.5 X width of the door. This will stack back into a very small space.

Kitchen window Ideas

Window treatment ideas for kitchens. Your over sink curtains should be a few cm’s short of the work surface even if this means just reaching the window sill. Also generally tied back to avoid splashes. (your kitchen floor will still end up flooded when the kids wash up after dinner, but at least your curtains should stay dry)

Another suggestion is don’t use curtains and if you need privacy then fit a roller blind with moisture resistant fabric.

Another thing to consider if you really do want curtains is having unlined curtains made of a good polycotton fabric. This will enable you to launder your curtains whenever they get cooking smells on them.

Great Ideas for you bathroom

Window treatment Ideas for your bathroom. If you have a window over a bath or shower. Then don’t bother with curtains full stop. It will be a complete waste of time and effort.

Really the only practical thing to do is fit a roller blind with a moisture resistant fabric.

If your window is away from the bath or shower then go for it and have some curtains. Even still keep them short and have them unlined. also pick a fabric that will launder well and dry well if they become damp with steam in the bathroom. Polycotton fabric are very good for this.

One last idea is to have a polyester sheer curtain on a rod drawn right across your window and scooped back into a hold back arm that matches your curtain rod. Dressed properly this can look very soft and feminine. Whilst giving you some privacy.

Patio doors and French doors!

Window treatment ideas for patio and French doors. these are great windows to have allowing lots of light into your room.

One of the drawbacks can be lack of privacy on occasion, or the sun maybe a problem.

An easy way to solve this is to fit a sheer curtain on its own rail fixed in the window recess behind your proper curtains. You can then open and close them to suit.

Panel track blinds a really great idea for large windows like this. They are very modern and contemporary. They can be opened and closed by moving the panels by hand or by pulling a cord. Just like a standard corded curtain rail.

The proper panel tracking system is a fairly pricey piece of kit. There are other ways of getting a similar look. I am sorting out some info on this and will put a new article out very soon

I hope this helps you with your “odd” shaped window.

Give Your Bedroom a New Look with Throw Pillows and Designer Curtains

The home needs to be a relaxing place in which its residents can unwind after a long day. Oftentimes much goes into decorating the main rooms of the home; these are the places that get the most visitors after all. But the bedrooms are also deserving of quality design, with soft duvet bedspreads and fluffy pillows for each member of the family, offering a sublime sleeping experience. Making a few adjustments to the bedroom décor can turn them from unkepmt to welcoming in a very short time!

Changing the look of your bedrooms can be done with a few minor updates. If more people knew that updating duvet bedspreads and adding attractive designer pillows on the bed can make a big impact to the feel of the room, so many people would take this option that sales for such items would explode! When you find bedspreads that are designed with colors that calm you, the bed becomes a beacon of rest for the weary. You can bring a splash of color to your bedspread by adding decorative pillows. Going one step further and hanging designer curtains that also coordinate with what you have placed on the bed brings everything in the room together for a cohesive appeal. Coordinating the colors on bedspreads and window curtains and accenting them with colorful pillows dresses up a room so much that no further decorating will be necessary .

Since the bedroom is where you recharge your battery, it is important that the space be one that really speaks to your senses. Bedding should be in colors that are inviting for rest; pillows should be the right firmness for your comfort. Everyone has a different type of pillow that would induce the most restful sleep; which is why there are so many different types of pillows for sale. Support pillows offer cervical support in multiple sleeping positions. Memory foam pillows are becoming more and more popular. Made from shredded memory foam, this type of pillow actually helps alleviate back and neck pain.

Children tend to go for the latest fashions, even when chosing bedspreads. You can easily find items in stores or online; or it can be accomplished with just a little imagination. If your child craves a specific style that isn’t readily available for store purchase, you could create a unique item yourself. Using transfer paper, a decorative pillow could be made featuring your child’s favorite animal, action hero or celebrity. Simply print a photo onto the transfer paper and then iron on to a pillow case or on fabric that you will use to make a bedspread. Even in the kids’ rooms, window drapes should coordinate with whatever design is displayed on bedspreads and accent pillows so the space looks put together.

A well-coordinated bedroom does not require dreary and messy painting projects. Colorful bedspreads, curtains, and pillows can tackle the job of a bedroom makeover all on their own.

Curtains Can Decorate Either Your Window Or Your View

Curtains are materials that are hung over a window for decoration and other purposes. The main purposes are to provide privacy, block sunlight and decoration.

If the window looks onto streets or sidewalks, then curtains can be used for privacy. Translucent curtains like net curtains or sheer curtains will only block sunlight partially. These types of curtains do not provide any privacy, especially at night. For privacy opaque curtains are better.

Curtains are also used for light control to prevent glare, for sleeping during the day, or watching TV etc. Opaque curtains are suited for light control. For partial light control sheer or net type curtains are better suited.

Curtains are also used for increasing the aesthetic appeal of a room. An elegant curtain greatly increases the aesthetics of a room and gives an opulent look. On the contrary dirty or ill matched curtains give a room a gloomy look. When the window looks onto a street it is better to give thought to the underside of the curtain as the curtain can be seen from outside and will dictate the appearance of the house.

Types of Curtains.

There are lots of varieties of curtains available in the market today. A few of them are:

Curtain Valance. These have deep frill fabrics framing the window and usually the curtain rod is hidden. They generally have pleated heading. The pleated headings can be decorated using braid, ribbons, tassels and trimmings.

Cascade Curtains. Cascaded curtains consist of two or more curtains hung over the window. The tiers are hung from transoms. Shirred curtains. These types of curtains have the fabric threaded through curtain rods at the top and bottom.

Tie back curtains. These curtains are gathered at the sides of the window and decoratively tied back at the lower part of the curtain with a sleeve or cord.

Cafe curtains. These are designed to cover only half of the window and are stationary. They are usually used in kitchens and bathrooms for privacy and are made form scalloped headings.

Pelmets. Pelmets are structures mounted above the windows on which the curtain rod is fixed.

The choice of curtains depends on the purpose for which the curtains are being installed. Color, fabric and style of curtain give the room a formal or informal appearance.

There are lots of decorative rods, pelmets, cordings, sleeves, beads, fringes, rings, eyelets available in the market to decorate curtains. Also a thought should be given on safety for floor length curtains when pets and children are present in the house.

Different Kinds of Curtains for Your Home

Curtains form the most important part of your home décor. Imagine a house without curtains. It is like a man without clothes or a flower without petals or trees without leaves. It will be an incomplete home. Curtains give your house a furnished look. They dress up your windows and, most important of all, they protect your house from sunlight and looks from unwanted people into your family peace. Curtains come in a variety of fabrics and designs. You can get normal curtains for your house or expensive designer ones. From silk to cottons to satins to nets to lace to nylon you name it and you will get it, in all fabrics, simple to rich, thick to diaphanous, anything that you want.

Shower Curtains

As the name suggests, shower curtains are used in the bathroom around the shower area to keep the water from getting all over the bathroom floor. This helps you to keep your bathroom dry and clean at all times. Different synthetic or natural materials determine the different types of shower curtains. Polyester and vinyl shower curtains are waterproof and inexpensive. If you have a bathroom which is luxurious this type of curtain will not match the décor of your room. Curtains made of cotton and linen looks plush and elegant but they mildew if they get damp. You can combine vinyl with cotton for attractiveness and for utility. Vinyl shower curtains come in every imaginable color, pattern and motif. This makes them adaptable to all kinds of styles from the bathroom of your master bedroom to guest’s room to children’s bathroom. Popular themes include rubber ducks, fish, sea shells, sail boats, balloons, clouds, or any simple patterned design. The background can be clear, so you can keep an eye on your children when they shower, or it can be an opaque shade. The advantage of vinyl and polyester curtains is that they keep the water inside the tub instead of it splashing onto the ground. Fabric shower curtains are permanent additions to the functions and décor of a bath room. Some are designed to match towels and bathmats. Some textiles have been treated with stain resistors and waterproof coatings to combat moisture, as they are more likely to absorb splashes. Hemp shower curtains provide the best of both worlds: cotton and vinyl, the heavy fabric is made of plant fiber like linen or cotton. However hemp is naturally antibacterial and anti fungal so it resists mildew and soap stains.

Kitchen Curtains

Kitchens have come a long way from the time when necessity and safety dictated that they be located outside the home. Through the years kitchens have evolved based on the needs and demands of the family and today era kitchens must be multifunctional. The most important thing while doing curtains for the kitchen is that these curtains should not obscure the entire kitchen concept. It is important to make sure that the cabinets and counter tops are in perfect coordination with the curtains you choose for your kitchen. When you choose the color for your kitchen curtains make sure you do that on a sunny day to make sure that it gives you the look you want. It is best not to choose synthetic or nylon kitchen curtains for safety reasons. Natural fabric like cotton is usually recommended for kitchen windows.

Window Curtains

A house with big windows and beautiful curtains in bright hues is everyone’s dream. Window curtains come in all materials, colors and textures. You will have a myriad of designs to choose your window curtains from. There are a few things you should keep in mind when you go to select curtains for your window: the color of the curtain should compliment the color of the wall of the room, if your room is small you should go for light colors and if the room is big you should for dark colors as it makes your room look spacious yet compact. The sunnier side of your house should have thick curtains to block the sunlight from heating up your room too much and on the other side you can always use fabrics like net or lace. The design that you choose completely depends on which room you are doing the curtains in. If it is the kid’s room then you should choose something like cartoons or alphabets or numbers or animals etc. If it’s the master bedroom then the curtains should add to the grace of the room, you can have big motifs or designs and the guest room curtains should be subtle and in warm colors. The design completely depends on your liking but you should also remember that the functionality of the curtain should be maintained.

Country Curtains

Window coverings come in so many different varieties today that it may be hard to decide on what you want. The decision may come down to personal taste but you can help yourself by doing some research on different varieties of window coverings. One popular type of window covering is the roman shade which is also known as country curtains. They are flat shades with dowels slotted horizontally up the back so they can be pulled up into soft horizontal folds. Roman shades give a clean modern look to your window space.

Curtain rods

No matter how good your curtains are, without curtain rods you just cannot put them in place. Curtain rods hold the curtains from the window top and let the curtain fall to its full length. You should first determine if you want to mount your curtain rods on the window casing or on the wall. You can choose the color of the rods to match the color of the wall or the curtains. The brackets that you choose for the rods can range from simple to intricate ones. The choice is completely yours and make sure you choose the best keeping in mind both your taste and your pocket.

Curtains ? history and types

Curtains which are known as drapes in the USA are what we use to block out light and preying eyes from looking into our homes. Net curtains help control the ambiance and flow of natural light into a room and when chosen correctly can finish off the decor of a room beautifully.   Also known as sheer curtains, they are made from translucent fabric too allow a lot of light into a room and also a basic level of UV protection while also maintaining maximum visibility through the curtains

There also many other types of curtains which have other uses, not just for windows.  Shower curtains for example are made purely to keep water from leaking out of your shower or bath and are made of water proof material. Some curtains which are hung over doorways where a door would normally be are known as portieres.  These types of curtains were very popular in wealthy households in the Victorian era.

Generally house hold curtains as well as giving your home privacy also help in sleeping as they stop light coming in. They come in many different shapes and sizes, colours patterns and material.  Getting the right type of curtains for rooms can complete the overall appearance of a room.

You can get manually opening curtains as well as curtains that are moved with cords or even remote controlled computers.  But net curtains generally stay put and are a permanent fixture, except for when they need cleaning.

In some countries wooden window shutters are fixed to the outside of buildings which still provide privacy and keep the building cool inside.

The history of curtains goes right back to the 1700′s when they were made out of cotton wool or silk, silk being the most expensive and exquisite. In the middle ages fabric was very expensive so only the very rich or upper classes would have them.  It wasn’t until the industrial era and the development of the textile trade that made fabric prices more affordable to most people.  Once the glass industry was in full swing and homes were installed with glass windows, this again helped with the textile industry and brought the prices of curtains down.

Today most net curtains are made out of synthetic material like polyester.  The beauty of this material is that it gives the look of silk but costs much lesser.  Basically there are three kinds of Net Curtains, the Voile, Jardinières and café curtains. Voile curtains are perfect for large windows or where you want full length cover. They come in many different colours and patterns but are mainly maid of wool as they are semi transparent.  Jardinière curtains are also full length curtains but they have an arch at the end.  These are great for keep the privacy but also allowing you to look out from the inside.  Also they allow for sun to shine through into your room. Cafe curtains are slightly different in that they only have half of the window, the bottom half.  Found commonly in quaint homes and cafes in France, these are great for kitchens where your window leads onto the back garden.

How To Choose Curtains And Bathroom Accessories
